Tunnel Workers Strike

MOSCOW -- Workers digging a railway tunnel in Siberia continued a week-long strike to protest unpaid back wages by staying underground, Itar-Tass said Tuesday.

Some 200 protesters have refused to come to the surface until they start receiving wages they haven't been paid in months, the news agency reported.

The workers, building a 15-kilometer tunnel on the Baikal-Amur Railway, also asked the Prosecutor General's Office to investigate the economic activities of the company in charge of the tunnel construction.

The tunnel is located near Lake Baikal in the small town of Severomuisk, about 4,400 kilometers east of Moscow.
