Shoigu Goes to Far East

MOSCOW -- Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov sent his emergencies minister on an urgent mission to the remote Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday in response to pleas for help in tackling a severe energy crisis.

Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu was due to leave for Kamchatka, about 7,000 kilometers and nine time zones east of Moscow, late Tuesday, a ministry spokeswoman said.

A fuel shortage has worsened sharply in Kamchatka since Russia slid into economic crisis, forcing the regional authorities to impose long power cuts to save energy as winter looms.
