Peacekeeper Killed

TBILISI, Georgia -- A Russian soldier serving in a peacekeeping force in Georgia's breakaway Abkhazia region was killed and four soldiers were injured when their armored vehicle hit an anti-tank mine, a regional official said Tuesday.

The official from Abkhazia's Interior Ministry said the incident occurred on Monday evening in the Gali district near the administrative border with the rest of Georgia.

He said the vehicle had been ferrying supplies to other peacekeepers.

About 1,500 Russian peacekeepers patrol the buffer zone between Georgia and Abkhazia, which broke from Tbilisi's rule in 1993 after a yearlong war in which 10,000 people were killed.
