Lebed's Control Plans

PARIS -- Retired General Alexander Lebed, the governor of the Krasnoyarsk region and a potential presidential candidate, plans to put Russian companies under political control, a newspaper reported Friday.

In an interview with the French economic daily La Tribune, Lebed said he intended to create holding organizations under political control to manage private or semipublic groups.

"These holding organizations would effectively be managed by regional power," he said.

The 48-year-old governor said he intended to shore up Krasnoyarsk's economy by replacing communist combines with capitalist alternatives, which would be kept under political control.
