Finland Talks Trade, EU

HELSINKI, Finland -- Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov met Tuesday with his Finnish counterpart, Paavo Lipponen, to discuss cooperation with the European Union and trade issues.

Lipponen's aides said talks would concentrate mainly on economic issues, following a drop in trade this fall amid the financial crisis and ruble devaluation.

Before the crisis, and since the end of Finland's recession in the early 1990s, the country's trade with Russia had been growing by up to 30 percent annually.

Trade with Russia now represents around 7 percent of Finland's foreign trade. Lipponen was to return to Finland later Tuesday.
