1,800 New HIV Cases

MOSCOW -- More than 1,800 new cases of HIV have been reported in Russia in the past six months, and 90 percent of those who contracted the virus were intravenous drug users, the Health Minister said.

The new cases bring the total number of people with HIV in Russia to 8,867, including 385 children, Vladimir Starodubov said Tuesday at a conference in St. Petersburg, Interfax reported. An additional 320 Russians have full-blown AIDS, he said.

Russian officials warn that the actual number of HIV cases may be up to 10 times higher. HIV and AIDS came to Russia late, and Russia still lacks comprehensive diagnostic and treatment programs.
