Schroder Visit to Refocus Relations With Russia

BONN, Germany -- Heralding a new era in Germany's ties with Russia, Chancellor Gerhard Schroder plans to meet ailing Boris Yeltsin as well as some of the Russian president's bitterest rivals on his visit to Moscow next week. Schroder's two-day trip starting Monday - his first to Russia since ousting his predecessor Helmut Kohl in September's election - is seen as opening a new chapter. Schroder will seek to make clear Germany remains Moscow's close Western ally but that, unlike Kohl, he wants to broaden contacts beyond Yeltsin to others including regional leaders. ""Gone are the days of steambath diplomacy,"" one Bonn official said. ""The chancellor aims to show that close cooperation continues but with a certain change of emphasis. ""Schroder wants to meet the whole political spectrum."" The source, who spoke on condition on anonymity, dismissed suggestions this might damage Yeltsin's standing, saying rather firmly that ""one person will no longer be able to monopolize relations.
