Vodka Output to Grow

MOSCOW -- Russia will increase vodka production by 60 percent next year, Deputy Prime Minister Gennady Kulik said Friday.

Russia produced 820 million liters of vodka and other strong drinks in 1998, Interfax said.

"We will do our best to squeeze what we can out of this industry," Kulik told lawmakers from the Agrarian Party.

The state recently announced it would be taking controlling stakes in all 184 Russian distilleries that make pure alcohol in a bid to collect more taxes.
