Luzhkov Slams West

MOSCOW -- Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov criticized the West on Tuesday for supporting the most liberal economic reforms that have taken place in Russia, news agencies reported.

Luzhkov, a potential candidate in the next presidential election, said he hoped that "our partners will gradually realize the seriousness of the mistakes made by our radically minded reformers," Interfax said.

Luzhkov singled out former Prime Minister Yegor Gaidar f whose government abolished Soviet-era price controls and pushed through free-

market reforms f and Anatoly Chubais, the architect of Russia's privatization.

The comments were in line with Luzhkov's usual populist style. Both Gaidar and Chubais are widely disliked in Russia, where many people believe that free-market reforms enriched a few insiders and impoverished the rest of the country.
