Fires Threaten Tigers

MOSCOW -- Forest fires raging for weeks in the Far East have now reached a prominent nature reserve that is home to endangered Siberian tigers, Itar-Tass reported Thursday.

More than 80 percent of the reserve that protects the tigers has been reduced to ashes by fires that have been raging in much of the Far East since last month.

Only 13 people in the tigers' reserve are at work battling the blazes, which cover some 280,000 hectares in the Primorsky Territory.

Nearly two-thirds of Sakhalin Island has been ravaged by an epidemic of fires that erupted after a recent dry spell.
