Bolshoi Great Dies

MOSCOW -- Algis Zhuraitis, music conductor of the Bolshoi Theater, has died, Russian news agencies said Monday. He was 70.

Zhuraitis died Sunday from a "prolonged grave illness," Itar-Tass said, quoting the theater's press service.

A native of Lithuania, Zhuraitis studied at conservatories in Vilnius and Moscow. During his four decades at the Bolshoi Theater, Zhuraitis conducted "Swan Lake," "The Nutcracker," "Romeo and Juliet," "Giselle" and other performances.

He was married to prominent singer Yelena Obraztsova, Itar-Tass said.
