Wings End Washington Win Streak

DETROIT -- Igor Larionov and Vyacheslav Kozlov scored third-period goals as the Detroit Red Wings defeated Washington 2-0, ending the Capitals' three-game winning streak.

Larionov scored on Detroit's 32nd shot 6:13 into the third period Sunday as the teams were skating 4-on-4. Kozlov added an empty-net goal with 19.3 seconds left.

Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood stopped only 15 shots for his third shutout of the season. He is 4-0 in his career against Washington.


"The Great One" was elevated to the greatest one Friday.

Superstar center Wayne Gretzky was named the best National Hockey League player ever by The Hockey News, which celebrated its 50th anniversary by issuing what it called the "Definitive List of the Top 50 NHL Players of All Time."

Gretzky beat out Bobby Orr and Gordie Howe for the top spot in voting by a panel of 50 hockey experts.
