Tajik Standoff Ends

MOSCOW -- Tajik government officials freed three detained fighters from an armed opposition group in exchange for the release of five officials taken hostage by the guerrillas.

Saturday's crisis was settled by Tajikistan's national reconciliation commission and the hostages were exchanged in the evening, Itar-Tass reported from Dushanbe, the Tajik capital.

The trouble began Wednesday when police detained three supporters of field commander Rakhmon Sanginov for illegally carrying weapons.

Sanginov's group seized the hostages to press demands for their release.
