Taiwan, Russia Link Up

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan and Russia are expected to inaugurate direct shipping links before the year's end to forge closer economic ties, a Russian official said Tuesday in Taipei.

"Details of the shipping agreement are due to be worked out in late 1998," said Oleg Lobov, chairman of Russia's Moscow-Taipei Economic and Cultural Coordination Committee.

The semi-official committee was set up to handle civil exchanges with Taiwan in the absence of official contacts as Moscow recognizes Beijing diplomatically.
