Shuttle Trade Declines

MOSCOW -- The amount of so-called shuttle trade is declining, but it still accounts for more than 20 percent of the imports to Russia, the government said Monday.

In the first 11 months of 1997, the unorganized trade shrank 7.1 percent to $14.6 billion and the percentage continues to drop, according to the Foreign Economic Relations Ministry.

Shuttle trade refers largely to the army of small businessmen who travel abroad and return with goods to resell in Russia. Only a small portion of the trade goes the other way around.
