Russian Held in N.Z.

AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- A 20-year-old Russian student appeared Monday in the Auckland District Court on several firearms charges following a weekend shooting of a compatriot.

The student, who was granted interim name suppression, is accused of firing at Valera Strokov and unlawful possession of a .32-calibre handgun. He also faced six other firearms and assault charges.

He was remanded in custody until Tuesday for the court to further consider his name suppression.

Strokov was still in hospital Monday for extensive surgery on a broken femur, police said.

Two other Russian-born students, who have Auckland addresses, also appeared on firearms and assault charges in the court Monday.

Tajik government officials said that five hostages were freed, Interfax said.
