Prostitute to Be Tried

MOSCOW -- In a rare case in Russia, a woman who allegedly ran a prostitution ring in Stavropol was officially charged with money-laundering, officials said Tuesday.

Police accused Maria Volkova of accumulating 55,000 rubles ($9,200) from her call-girl business. Investigators said she used the money obtained illegally to buy an apartment and made other investments, Interfax reported.

Volkova's case, turned over to a court in the southern city, has attracted the media attention because it represents a rare attempt to clamp down on the country's thriving prostitution business.
