Oil Pipeline to Pakistan

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan -- Construction of a pipeline intended to carry natural gas from Turkmenistan to Pakistan via Afghan territory will begin toward the end of this year, the U.S. energy company Unocal said Friday.

Unocal holds a 46.5 percent stake in a consortium set up last October to build the pipeline, which is projected to carry 20 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas annually from Turkmenistan's Daulatabad field to Pakistan's town of Multan.

The 1,500 kilometer pipeline would pass through 764 kilometers of Afghan territory. Afghanistan's purist Islamist Taleban militia has warmly welcomed the project.
