Mine Blasts Continue

MOSCOW -- More explosions shook a coal mine in the Russian arctic Thursday, hampering efforts to recover more of the bodies of miners believed killed in a methane blast Sunday.

Funerals were held Thursday for four of the 10 miners whose bodies have been retrieved from the Tsentralnaya mine near Vorkuta, a city inside the Arctic Circle about 2,000 kilometers northeast of Moscow, news agencies reported.

Meanwhile, a miner was killed in an apparent accident in another Vorkuta coal mine Wednesday night.

The body of the 40-year-old miner was found by his co-workers in a coal container, Interfax and Itar-Tass said. The cause of his death was not yet determined and an investigation was under way.

The new explosions in the Tsentralnaya mine were caused by a buildup of methane gas in the shafts.
