Journalists Under Fire

MOSCOW -- Fifteen journalists were killed in the line of duty in Russia in 1997, one more than the previous year, the news watchdog Glasnost Fund said Monday.

Quoted by Itar-Tass, Oleg Panfilov, the fund's head of monitoring, said 43 journalists were reported beaten in the past year, 21 kidnapped, and 19 unlawfully arrested.

Ten women journalists were beaten, he said.

Panfilov noted that the end of the war in Chechnya, in August 1996, did not lower the number of fatalities among journalists, but it did see an unprecedented rise in the number of journalists kidnapped there.
