Extradition Denied

WARSAW, Poland -- The Warsaw Appeals Court on Tuesday upheld an earlier decision not to extradite Sergei Stankevich to Russia, where the former adviser to President Boris Yeltsin is charged with bribery.

In November, a provincial court said there were no grounds to extradite Stankevich because Polish laws hold only Poles, not foreigners, accountable on bribery charges.

Moscow prosecutors allege that Stankevich took a $10,000 bribe for organizing a concert on Red Square in 1992, when he was Moscow's deputy mayor. Prosecutor General Yury Skuratov had said he will renew the extradition request.
