Cultural Sell-Offs Ban

MOSCOW -- The Russian government Thursday banned privatization of cultural collections and archives of national significance, Itar-Tass reported.

The ban, adopted at a government meeting chaired by First Deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Chubais, covered sales of collections such as state-owned film and photo archives.

But the government agreed to speed up privatization of other culturally significant assets held by regional and local governments.

First Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov said that of 70,000 buildings included on a list of cultural monuments slated to be sold off, less than 1 percent had been privatized.
