U.S. Rates Steady

WASHINGTON -- Federal Reserve policy makers meeting Tuesday amid a near-perfect state of the U.S. economy are expected to keep interest rates unchanged.

But experts said the central bank's Federal Open Market Committee might consider nudging up rates higher later this year to keep inflationary pressures at bay.

"There are distant signs that the inflation picture potentially could deteriorate in the future but the economy is not generating sufficiently loud signals of that yet," said Anthony Chan, chief economist at Banc One Investment Advisors Corp. in Columbus, Ohio.
