U.S. Embassy in Kiev Put on Alert

KIEV -- The U.S. Embassy in Kiev has stepped up security measures after receiving a warning from the Ukrainian government about a potential terrorist threat, the embassy said Monday.

"On Sept. 26, the U.S. Embassy was notified by Ukrainian authorities of a potential terrorist threat against U.S. government facilities in Ukraine,'' the embassy said in a brief statement.

"Over the weekend, the Ukrainian government took steps to deal with the situation, and the embassy has put into effect the appropriate security precautions,'' it said.

The embassy did not release details of the possible threat or of the additional security precautions.

Ukrainian security officials sought to play down rumors it had headed off a terrorist plot against U.S. and Israeli diplomats in the Ukrainian capital. A spokesman for the Ukrainian Security Service, the successor to the KGB in the former Soviet republic, said it had not recently thwarted an actual terrorist act against the U.S. or Israeli missions.

"No act as such has been thwarted, because there was no such act,'' Security Service spokesman Anatoly Sakhno said.

Sakhno declined to comment on whether a terrorist threat existed. He would not confirm or deny that the Security Service informed the U.S. or Israeli Embassy of danger.
