U.S. Donates Wheat

WASHINGTON -- The United States will donate about 18,000 metric tons of wheat to two charities for their work in Russia, the U.S. Agriculture Department said Friday.

The wheat will be donated before the Sept. 30 end of the fiscal year. It will come through the Food for Progress program, which supports development of agricultural free markets.

According to the Agriculture Department, recipients will be the Russian Farm Community Project Inc. and The Cooperative League of the USA, who will sell the wheat and use the proceeds.

Department spokesmen were not immediately available to describe the projects that would benefit from the donation.
