UN Halts Congo Aid

GENEVA () -- A UN refugee agency has suspended aid to Rwandan refugees still in the Democratic Republic of Congo, or DRC, after accusing President Laurent Kabila's government of repatriating them forcibly, said Pierce Gerety, regional director with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

The DRC last week sent home some 800 Rwandan and Burundian refugees from a transit camp in Kisangani, in the northeast of the former Zaire.

Diplomats and humanitarian groups fear that by expelling the refugees the DRC government was seeking to remove potential witnesses to atrocities committed in the country since 1993 -- including massacres allegedly carried out by Kabila's fighters -- before investigators can interview them.
