Tonkov Bails Out

n SANTANDER, Spain-- Furious Tour of Spain organizers said that they would be filing an official complaint to the UCI, the sport's governing body, against Russian Pavel Tonkov after he failed to start the 16th stage.

The race organizers claimed Monday that Tonkov, who won two stages on Friday and Sunday, was not ill as he claimed but had dropped out so he could visit his wife and newborn child in Madrid.

Tonkov's Mapei team hit back by saying 28-year-old Tonkov, who won the Tour of Italy last year, had developed the first signs of bronchitis and was in a "feverish state."

Tonkov had said Friday that he wanted to quit the race and go to Madrid to see his family.

Czech Jan Svorada sprinted to win Monday's 195-kilometer stage, finishing with a pack of 20 riders and edging Germany's Marcel Wust and Italy's Alessio Di Basco.
