Solidarity Government

WARSAW, Poland -- Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski on Monday asked Solidarity to lead a new government following its Sept. 21 election victory, the union bloc's leader said.

Solidarity chairman Marian Krzaklewski said after meeting the president that he will propose a prime minister by Oct. 17, within the deadline set by Poland's new constitution.

"We expect that the president will appoint this candidate as prime minister,'' Krzaklewski told reporters.

The meeting with Krzaklewski opened a series of talks by the president with Poland's political leaders on forming a new Cabinet.

Krzaklewski called the talks "constructive.'' He said Solidarity had a strong candidate for prime minister, but refused to reveal the name before it is presented to the president next month.
