Sampras Sinks Rafter for $2 M

MUNICH, Germany -- Top seed Pete Sampras of the United States stymied second seed Patrick Rafter of Australia for the second straight week to win the $6 million Grand Slam Cup tennis event in Munich, Germany.

Sampras overwhelmed the U.S. Open champion 6-2, 6-4, 7-5 in just 94 minutes Sunday to claim not only his sixth singles title of the year, but also a hefty $2 million.

Sampras, 26, broke Rafter four times and never lost his own serve. In fact, Sampras' performance was so dominating, he won his first 20 points on his serve.

"Pete was too good for me but that's nothing new," said Rafter. "In fact, he's been too good for me the last seven or eight times."

In Leipzig, Germany, World No. 2 Jana Novotna faltered in the second set before overcoming South African Amanda Coetzer 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to win the $450,000 Leipzig tennis tournament Sunday.
