Paulus Prevails

LEIPZIG, Germany -- Barbara Paulus, the first seeded player in action, had to fight from behind to oust Helena Sukova in the first round of the $450,000 Leipzig Grand Prix tennis tournament.

The six-seeded Austrian prevailed Monday with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over the Czech veteran.

The four top-seeded players in the tournament -- No. 1 Martina Hingis, No. 2 Jana Novotna, No. 3 Iva Majoli and No. 4 Amanda Coetzer -- received first-round byes.
