Nurses Sentenced

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- A British nurse faced possible execution in Saudi Arabia and another was sentenced to 500 lashes and eight years in prison Tuesday after they were found guilty in the murder of an Australian colleague.

Saudi lawyers for the family of the victim, Yvonne Gilford, said guilty verdicts had been issued against Deborah Parry, 38, and Lucille McLauchlan, 31.

Britain said it was disturbed at McLauchlan's flogging sentence, but the Foreign Office in London was unable to confirm the court in the eastern Saudi town of Khobar had also handed down a death sentence against Parry.

Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Britain said he believed the victim's brother had agreed to waive his right to demand the death penalty.
