Nagorny Karabakh Poll

STEPANAKERT, Azerbaijan -- The people of Nagorny Karabakh, a rugged stretch of land at the heart of a decade-long war between Azeris and Armenians, held elections for a new president Monday despite foreign pressure to abandon the poll.

The region, populated mostly by ethnic Armenians, was under the jurisdiction of Azerbaijan during the Soviet period but broke away and declared its intention to be annexed to Armenia as the communist superpower unravelled in the late 1980s.

Nagorny Karabakh's "foreign minister," 40-year-old lawyer Arkady Gukasyan, is expected to easily defeat two other candidates.
