Kremlin Denies Lost Bomb Claim

A government spokesman on Tuesday denied the existence of dozens of suitcase-size nuclear bombs and implications that Russia has lost control of its weaponry.

Igor Shabdurasolov dismissed the latest allegations about missing weapons in statements by Alexei Yablokov, a prominent environmentalist and former adviser to President Boris Yeltsin.

Yablokov said Monday he knew people who had been involved in making bombs of that kind in the 1970s and said the bombs may be unaccounted for. Yablokov's comments followed similar allegations made by former security chief Alexander Lebed.
