Hernandez Wins Record 9th

TORONTO, Canada -- Rookie Livan Hernandez improved to 9-0 and the Florida Marlins completed a three-game sweep of Toronto with an 8-3 win over the Blue Jays.

Hernandez became the first rookie to start 9-0 in a season since Whitey Ford of the New York Yankees in 1950. The right-hander also set a club record with six straight strikeouts as Florida won for the seventh time in nine games.

Hernandez matched a career high with eight strikeouts. He allowed seven hits in 7 2/3 innings of his 12th major league start.

Gary Sheffield homered for Florida, 9-3 in interleague play. Jose Cruz Jr. hit his 21st homer for Toronto. Woody Williams (7-13) was the losing pitcher.

White Sox 3, Astros 1. In Chicago, Albert Belle drove in two runs, reaching 100 RBIs for the sixth straight season, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Houston Astros to sweep the three-game interleague series.

James Baldwin (11-13) allowed six hits and a run in 6 2/3 innings. Matt Karchner got three outs for his 12th save.

The game ended when Craig Biggio was thrown out at third as the Astros tried a double steal. Derek Bell was at the plate with runners on first and second when catcher Jorge Fabregas nailed Biggio.

Belle doubled in a run in the third and had an RBI single in the fifth off Shane Reynolds (6-9).
