British Sports Face Cancellation for Di Funeral

LONDON -- Saturday's sports fixtures in Britain are set to be called off to mark the funeral of Princess Diana, officials said Monday.

The major event on Saturday, the NatWest one-day cricket final between Essex and Warwickshire, has been put off until Sunday.

The other big event, the World Cup qualifying game between Scotland and Belarus, is also facing postponement. A decision is expected Tuesday.

English soccer's premier league have no games scheduled for Saturday, but a full schedule of first, second and third division games are facing a change of dates. A decision is expected Tuesday.

England's World Cup qualifier with Moldova on Sept. 10 will go ahead, the Football Association said Monday.

FA spokesman Steve Double said English soccer matches Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday would be played as usual but with a minute of silence before each game.

Saturday's European and English rugby program is set for a blanket postponement, and horse racing may also be canceled, officials said.

Soccer and rugby union matches were postponed Sunday following the Princess's death in a Paris car accident earlier that day.

Princess Anne will not attend this week's International Olympic Committee session because of the death of her former-sister-in-law.
