Britain Spends Big

LONDON -- The latest British economic growth figures show consumer spending rattled along at a hectic rate in the second quarter but there is no question of repeating the roller coaster 1980s boom which eventually turned to bust, experts said Tuesday.

The Office for National Statistics said the economy grew 3.5 percent on an annual basis, not 3.4 as first estimated.

Within that, consumer spending was a hefty 4.2 percent higher than a year earlier but people also saved more.
