Big Names Top List of Fall IPOs

NEW YORK -- As the new issues market idles through summer's slow season, underwriters are concocting some enticing fall offers, analysts say, including a few that feature the established brand names the market craves.

Avis Rent-A-Car Inc., with its $250 million initial public offering slated for September, is among the more closely watched offers coming on deck. It carries the brand-name recognition that tends to set such offerings apart, not to mention the fact that fellow car rental business Hertz Corp. set a precedent in the industry with a $400 million initial public offering in late April.

However, analysts said Avis would be hard-pressed to follow in Hertz's tracks.

Petersen Cos Inc. also promises to stage a sizable and eye-catching initial public offer. Underwriters Morgan Stanley predict the publisher will price late in September, but have not yet filed terms for the offering. Petersen magazines include Teen, Hot Rod and Skin Diver.

Other new issues include Beringer Wine Estates Holdings Inc., Napa Valley's oldest continuously operating winery, and the restaurant chain Friendly Ice Cream. Beringer's $100 million offering is underwritten by Goldman Sachs & Co. and represents about 35 percent of the voting power on the company's outstanding capital stock.

The Friendly Ice Cream offering, also expected to generate $100 million, is underwritten by Montgomery Securities.
