Villeneuve Laps Last, Laps Best

BUDAPEST, Hungary -- Unfortunately for Damon Hill -- and Michael Schumacher too -- the Hungarian Grand Prix was 77 laps instead of 76.

One lap less on the race would have given Hill his first victory this year. One lap less would have given Schumacher a little more breathing room in his battle for the world Formula One title.

However, the extra lap gave Jacques Villeneuve an unexpected victory Sunday and made the season standings a little tighter.

Villeneuve won his ninth career and fifth race of the season with a sudden last-lap victory over Hill who had led since the 30th lap.

Hill led by 24 seconds at the end of 75 laps and four entering the final lap, but it was too little. Villeneuve passed Hill in the first part of the final lap an went onto to win by nine seconds.

Schumacher now has 56 points in the season standings, leading Villeneuve by three with six races left. Schumacher would have led by seven if Hill stayed in first, with the next race at the Belgian Grand Prix in two weeks.
