N.Y. Police Shake-Up

NEW YORK () -- Responding to allegations that police officers tortured a man in custody inside the station house of Brooklyn's 70th Precinct last weekend, Police Commissioner Howard Safir swept the precinct clean Thursday, reassigning its two top supervisors, suspending a desk sergeant and placing 10 other officers on desk duties.

In announcing the shake-up Thursday, the commissioner and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani also demanded that other officers at the Flatbush precinct step forward with anything they know about the alleged brutalization of Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant.

One officer has been criminally charged, and his partner that night has been assigned to desk duty.
