Dodgers Hurler Shuts Expos Down

LOS ANGELES -- Ismael Valdes pitched 8 1/3 shutout innings and Mike Piazza homered as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat former teammate Pedro Martinez and the Montreal Expos 1-0 for their 13th win in 19 games.

Outfielder Otis Nixon, acquired from Toronto on Tuesday and playing in his second game for the Dodgers on Thursday, robbed David Segui of home runs with spectacular catches in the second and fourth innings.

The victory kept the Dodgers 1 1/2 games behind first-place San Francisco in the NL West.

Martinez, traded by the Dodgers to the Expos after the 1993 season for second baseman Delino DeShields, fell to 1-3 lifetime against Los Angeles despite giving up only five hits -- three to Raul Mondesi -- and striking out 12 in seven innings.
