Cop Killers Linked to Gang: Paper

Investigators searching for gunmen who killed three policemen in a July 31 shoot-out have identified two members of a Moscow gang as suspects, Kommersant Daily newspaper reported Monday.

The shoot-out took place in broad daylight at a storage facility used by a trading company on Goncharnaya Ulitsa in central Moscow when police responding to a burglar alarm were met by gunfire from armed robbers.

Three police officers and one attacker were killed and another attacker, as well as a policewoman and a passerby, were wounded. The other gunmen made a successful escape in a car.

According to the newspaper, the attackers belonged to a criminal group from the Perovo district of Moscow and were attempting to extort money from the firm's owners.

The paper reported the firm had previously been approached by the same gang, but instead of fulfilling the order they contacted the police.

The attempt to catch the criminals failed at the time, and they returned July 31.

According to the newspaper, even members of Perovo gang described the attackers as "real dolts" to police.

Spokesmen for Moscow police and the prosecutor said they could not confirm the Kommersant story other than to say they were seeking two suspects with criminal records.
