Aussies Take 5th Ashes Series Win

NOTTINGHAM, England -- Australia underlined their domination of England's cricketers by winning the fifth test by 264 runs and so securing their fifth successive series victory.

The latest Ashes thrashing, coming in Sunday's penultimate over in the fourth day at Trent Bridge, was the result of a sorry English batting display as the hosts were bowled out for 186.

After Australia had taken their overnight total of 167 for 4 to 336 all out, they systematically carved their way through the fragile English ranks.

Only Graham Thorpe, who was left unbeaten on 82, showed any sort of application as England faced the prospect of batting for a day and a half to save the match.

Wickets fell at regular intervals and it only needed the extra half-hour, claimed by skipper Mark Taylor, to finish the job.

Victory was completed when Devon Malcolm edged Glenn McGrath to Mark Waugh in the slips to spark noisy celebrations in the Australian ranks.

Australia's bowlers shared the wickets with three each for McGrath, Shane Warne and Jason Gillespie and one for Paul Reiffel.
