2 Dead in Ossetia

MOSCOW () -- Two police officers were killed by an armed gang in the restive Russian region of North Ossetia, officials said Friday.

The firefight occurred before dawn when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in the village of Tsalyk, North Ossetia's Interior Ministry reported.

It was the eighth fatal attack in the southern region in the past three weeks, according to Interior Ministry figures cited by Itar-Tass.

North Ossetia borders the separatist republic of Chechnya in the volatile Caucasus region and is embroiled in a lingering territorial and ethnic conflict with neighboring Ingushetia.
