Palestine Stores Closed

HEBRON, West Bank ( -- Israel shut down Palestinian shops in parts of the West Bank city of Hebron on Thursday, sparking clashes between angry Palestinian youths and Israeli soldiers, witnesses said.

The army closed the shops in response to shots that were fired overnight at a building housing Jewish settlers. Army jeeps patrolled the portion of the city under Israeli control to enforce the shutdown.

Witnesses said soldiers fired rubber bullets at youths who pelted them with stones and hurled fire bombs across the line that divides the city in two. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Major General Uzi Dayan, the Israeli army commander over the central region, ordered the shops closed and instructed troops to keep roadblocks erected last week around Hebron in place indefinitely, the army said.
