Kovalyov Fill-In

MOSCOW () -- President Boris Yeltsin appointed Georgy Kulikov as acting justice minister to replace an official suspended in Russia's video scandal, an aide said Monday.

Kulikov previously served as first deputy to Valentin Kovalyov, who was suspended over video footage showing him cavorting with nude women.

The appointment was announced in the Kremlin by presidential spokesman Sergei Yastrzhembsky.

The scandal broke earlier this month when a Moscow newspaper ran photos purporting to show Kovalyov in a sauna allegedly frequented by a mafia gang. The paper suggested that the justice minister had ties to a banker jailed on suspicion of embezzling millions of dollars.

Yeltsin suspended Kovalyov last Wednesday pending the outcome of a probe he ordered.
