German Arson Trial

LUEBECK, Germany () -- A German court acquitted a Lebanese man of setting a fire that claimed 10 lives at a hostel for asylum seekers after a public outcry about what had been seen as another racist arson attack.

The juvenile court in the city of Luebeck said Monday there was no proof that Safwan Eid, now 22 but legally a minor at the time of the January 1996 blaze, set the fire in which 38 other people were injured.

Eid, who had pleaded not guilty and alleged the fire was started by neo-Nazis, is entitled to compensation for his time served in detention.
