Driver Hits Mausoleum

MOSCOW () -- A drunken Russian driver slammed his car over the weekend into a fence surrounding the Red Square mausoleum of Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin, police said Monday.

The driver, identified only as A. Ayvazov, 28, drove his Saab 9000 onto Red Square at high speed Friday night and lost control of the vehicle, hitting the chain fence and damaging it, Moscow police spokesman Alexander Cherednichenko said.

Police launched a criminal investigation into the incident, he said.

All traffic on the historic square adjacent to the Kremlin is forbidden, apart from a small side section reserved for government cars.
