'Dirty War' Conviction

MADRID, Spain () -- Spain's central military court convicted a senior military intelligence officer Thursday of stealing secret files on a "dirty war" against Basque separatist rebels in the '80s.

The court sentenced Colonel Juan Alberto Perote, former head of covert operations, to seven years in prison for stealing secrets that affected state security.

The court said Perote had stolen 1,200 documents from Spain's military intelligence department CESID when he was sacked in 1991.

The top secret files include some that are vital to state security and others that implicate the former Socialist government in the "dirty war" in which 28 people were killed.
