Barca Edges Out Betis for Spanish Cup

MADRID, Spain -- Portuguese international Luis Figo was Barcelona's hero in its extratime 3-2 Spanish Cup final victory against Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

Figo scored the decisive goal five minutes from the end of extratime to give the Catalan club a record-matching 23rd Cup victory.

The Spanish Cup brought a triumphant end to Bobby Robson's last year as Barcelona's coach.

Barcelona confirmed Monday that Ajax boss Louis van Gaal would take over from Robson as coach for the next three seasons.

Betis took the initiative from the start, and its early efforts paid off with an Alfonso Munoz goal in the 11th minute.

A minute before halftime, Figo got his foot on the ball in a penalty area melee and slotted it past Pedro Jaro in the Betis goal, to tie the score at 1-1.

The game seemed to be ebbing toward overtime, when Nigerian international Finidi George slid the ball past Vitor Baia, putting Betis up 2-1.

Betis concentration lapsed though, and Barcelona striker Juan Pizzi scored almost immediately at the other end.

During extratime an energetic Figo found Oscar Garcia out wide on the left. The substitute's shot fell conveniently at the feet of Figo for his second goal.
