AT&T Merger Off

NEW YORK -- Despite ending its talks to merge with SBC Communications Inc., AT&T Corp. is leaving open the option of another partnership as a way to break into local phone markets on a broad scale.

Possible partners cited by industry analysts are a regional telephone company or GTE, which provides local phone service across the United States.

But AT&T is prepared to go it alone if a partnership falls through, a source said, adding that talks to merge AT&T and SBC finally ended Friday amid protests that the $50 billion marriage would squeeze competition.
